February brought a number of books into my life, and while there are only eight for this month, it was still an interesting mix of reads. Check out the books themselves below and let me know in the comments ones you've added to your TBR or have already read yourself.
My February Reads:
The Charmed Library: by Jennifer Moorman.
I purchased the paperback for this book at Walmart because the cover was really nice. The blurb pulled me in as a story about book characters coming to life in a library. I don't know what writer or reader who wouldn't love that! I rated this book 3 stars mainly because other than the adult content, it read more like a YA novel. The character that was let out of its book that was a villain, didn't have that "fear" like I expected and the book didn't meet my expectations. That said, I think it was a decent read, and I did enjoy the ending. Executed a different way and this would have been a 5 star read.
The German Girl: by Eoin Dempsey.
Over the last few years I've grown a liking to WWII Historical Fiction. When I read stories based on or surrounding true events, it inspires me to deep dive into research on the truth. The German Girl is a story about a woman named Monika who marries a man and they flee Germany just before Hitler's rule. When her husband joins the Army as a pilot, she decides that she doesn't want to simply sit back and wait on her husband. This is apparently book one in a series based on this character. It was interesting, intriguing, and the ending seemed abrupt, but that’s the only way this wasn’t a 5 star read for me. Well done, writing was engaging and I really enjoyed the story. I rated this 4 stars.
The Wife Before: by Shanora Williams.
This was my first five star read of the month. The Wife Before is a story with a thrilling journey for a young woman who when down in her luck meets a rich celebrity golfer and falls in love. The rumors surrounding him though include the suspicious death of his first wife. I enjoyed the suspense of this novel by author Shanora Williams.
The Titanic Sisters: by Patricia Falvey.
This story was part of my Titanic binge that I found myself in because the story of the infamous sinking ship is fascinating to me. In this story, while it quickly glosses over the actual Titanic part, it instead shows the aftermath of those who survived. Two sisters, one a favorite...one not...must make their path in the new world after tragedy. I'll let the blurb speak for itself on this one, which can be found in the title link. My review on Goodreads simply states, "This was one of those books that I regretted reading so quickly because I didn’t want it to end", because it's true. I gave this one 5 stars.
The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf.
This was a unique story that took a little bit to get into but once I did I was engrossed. It's a story within a story within a story, but really done well. A true crime writer is snowed in at the house where years before two people were murdered and a young girl disappeared without a trace. When the author encounters a small child in the middle of a snow storm, little does she know just how connected she is to the child and the story of the house. This was a 4 star read for me.
Ship of Dreams by Donna Jones Alward.
This is a best friend story and boy did this Titanic historical fiction take me on a journey. This was an emotional tale that really pulled me in and made me feel like I was on the ship. Two women with different goals. A friendship deeper than most sisterly relationships. One wants to save her marriage, the other wants to find a new life in New York. Drama, tension, and everything you could want in a novel. I gave this book 4 stars.
The Hollywood Governess by Alexandra Weston.
My review for this book on Goodreads says, " I did NOT want this book to end", and I didn't. This was my first read of the month and this story of a governess taking a job in a different country all because her family's home needs a new roof. She is hired to be a governess for a child in Hollywood who recently lost her movie star mother. The male lead in this novel is grieving, but not all is what it seems. I gave this book 5 stars and if you love historical fiction and tales of unexpected love, grab a copy of The Hollywood Governess.
That was my list for the month of February. March reading is well underway and I can't wait to share with you what I've been reading. Got any favorites I should add to my list this year? Drop it in the comments.
